The German operator, which has operations in Malta and Gibraltar, may have been operating in violation of the 2005 Gambling Act, according to the UK national regulator, who made the news.

The Frankfurt Stock Exchange-listed operator, with headquarters in Düsseldorf, may have failed in areas of social responsibility and anti-money laundering, all of which were cited as "important concerns" in the suspension decision, according to the UKGC.

“We have made it clear to the operator that during the course of the suspension, we expect it to focus on treating consumers fairly and keeping them fully informed of any developments which impact them,” the Commission stated.

The regulator also mentioned that, based on concerns that the company has not operated in compliance with its license requirements, its examination of Bet-at-home may determine that the company is "unsuitable to carry on regulated activities."

Customers who have active accounts may still withdraw money even if Bet-at-home will no longer be able to accept any more wagers from them.

Following the evaluation, Bet-at-Home is required to abide by any recommendations provided by the UK Gambling Commission in order to have its license renewed. It is impossible to predict how long the evaluation will take, although it is unlikely to be finished soon.

Bet-at-Home has drawn criticism from countries other than the UK. In Switzerland among other emerging markets in Europe, it had intended to establish itself.

The company has also stopped operating in the German and Dutch markets, where the industry has changed to one with stricter regulations. However, the Swiss Supreme Court ruled that Bet-at-Home was not permitted to set up shop there.
