888poker and PokerStars leave the Russian Market

Massive Exodus from the Russian Online Poker Market

Since the start of the war against Ukraine, Russians have lost access to many popular internet services, including streaming services, and adult sites, as well as simple daily life services such as banking and fast food chains, which are limited.

Now, Russian online poker players are taking the hit. A few of the major online poker operators in the country have left the market.

The first noticeable case was PokerStars. Initially, they canceled the EPT. Shortly after, they announced they were suspending operations in Russia entirely.

The most recent case, on March 15th, 2022, is 888poker. The operator announced on their Twitter account that they would be suspending their operations in Russia as well, until further notice.

The money that the players had on this account is frozen, and inaccessible until 888poker decides to resume operation or leave Russia entirely when they would then return the money to the players.

Online poker players in Russia now have very limited options to play. The main option in terms of big poker sites would be GGPoker, which recently saw a surge in traffic from that region. Other online poker sites, however, reported a decrease in traffic of around 13% since the start of the war. There are also several campaigns going on poker sites and by players with the goal of supporting Ukraine.
