Player Boycott Against Rake Increase at GGPoker

Following a player boycott, GGPoker reduces the high-stakes rake. In what might be the first effective boycott by professional poker players, GGPoker has decided against raising the rake in cash games.

GGPoker raised the rake in their high-stakes cash games at the beginning of the month from 4.02 BBs to 7.08 BBs. This only applied to bets of $25/$50 or more; bets lower than that had no impact.

Due to the tiny size of the high-stakes community, they were able to organize, and 90 high-stakes players banded together to boycott the games.

When a group of poker experts attempted to protest changes at an online poker room in the past, their efforts were ignored. Either the operator carried out the alterations or the games themselves became crowded as a result of the absence of so many excellent pros.

That is not the case this time, though. At GGPoker, traffic at the high-stakes tables greatly diminished, and the operator and players met to establish a common ground.

The increased rake has therefore been reduced by 90% and, in some cases, has fallen below the level it was at prior to the initial increases.

If players are able to organize in this way, it may be the first time a boycott has truly succeeded in online poker and is encouraging for the game's future. Since there are so many participants in low and mid-stakes games and just a small portion of them communicate with one another, it is obvious that this task is considerably more difficult there.
