What Is Squid Poker?

Squid Poker keeps the standard rules of Hold’em and Omaha intact, but adds a new layer based around tokens and a shared penalty pool.

Every time a player wins a hand at showdown, they receive a token. At the same time, all players contribute a small amount into a separate Squid pool during the round.

When the round ends, players who failed to win a hand are penalized, while the collected pool is redistributed among successful players according to the number of tokens they earned.

The result is a format where simply folding and waiting for premium hands becomes much less effective.

How the System Works

Each round lasts for a set number of hands or until specific conditions are met, depending on the platform.

During the round, players try to accumulate tokens by winning hands. At the end, anyone without a token effectively “pays” the table, while active players receive extra rewards from the pool.

On online platforms, the mechanic is automated, making the format easy to follow. Players can track token progress visually while the software handles all calculations and payouts automatically.

The structure creates constant pressure to stay involved and compete for pots instead of playing overly tight.

More Aggressive Poker

Squid Poker significantly changes optimal strategy compared to regular cash games.

In traditional poker, folding is often neutral or correct. In Squid Poker, folding too often increases the risk of ending the round without a token and losing additional money through penalties.

The format rewards players who adapt quickly and maintain pressure throughout the round.

Higher Variance, Bigger Action

The added reward system increases variance while also creating more action-heavy games.

Players chase tokens aggressively, leading to larger pots and more frequent confrontations. Passive strategies become less effective, while proactive play gains additional value through the token system.

This creates a faster and more dynamic environment compared to standard cash games, especially online where rounds and payouts happen automatically.

Available on GGPoker and ClubGG

Currently, Squid Poker is available on both GGPoker and ClubGG, though the mechanics differ slightly between platforms.

On GGPoker, the format is mainly available at higher stakes and requires players to request access through support.

ClubGG offers a more flexible version where club administrators can activate the Squid feature directly inside games.

Both versions visually track tokens during play and automatically distribute penalties and rewards at the end of each round.

From High-Stakes Live Games to Online Poker

The concept originally emerged in private high-stakes games in Asia before becoming more widely known through streamed cash games connected to the Triton Poker scene.

Its online adaptation has made the format much more accessible, allowing players to experience the mechanic in a structured and transparent environment.

Many players compare Squid Poker to “Stand Up” games popularized in live poker, though Squid introduces a more developed reward and redistribution system.

A New Direction for Poker?

Squid Poker changes the incentives behind every decision at the table. Instead of simply protecting chips, players must actively compete for tokens and avoid penalties.

With more aggression, faster action, and built-in redistribution mechanics, the format offers a completely different type of cash game experience — and it may only continue growing from here.
